All Things Scottish At Burns Night Dinner
Don your kilts, swish some whisky and celebrate Scotland's Robert Burns with and evening of bagpipes, tartan, haggis, song, dance, fun and humour
The Cape Town Burns Club’s 25th annual dinner on 9 February 2019 at Kelvin Grove Club in Newlands is set to break its own record as the biggest celebration of Scotland in Africa.
WHAT IS BURNS NIGHT?
Burns Night is a global phenomenon where Scots celebrate the life and works of Scotland's most famous poet and writer, Robert Burns (1759–1796), along with all things Scottish.
ABOUT ROBERT BURNS
Burns – the “people’s poet’ – was a humanitarian who stood for social justice and gender equality. He was the creator of some of the most iconic songs, sayings and writings in the English language and other languages worldwide. His song, Auld Lang Syne, is believed to be sung in more languages and dialects on more occasions than any other song on the planet.
SCOTLAND IN CAPE TOWN
Cape Town Burns Night celebrates the ever-strong fundamental links between Scotland and South Africa. Over the years, dinner guests have evolved from a purely Scottish crowd to a collection of 15 different nationalities. These days, the event has a younger feel with a distinctly Mother City heartbeat. It’s remarkable how one man’s words have created an immortal legacy of kindness and unity.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT BURNS NIGHT
Dinner comprises a delicious three-course meal, traditional haggis, Monkey Shoulder malt whisky, Hendricks Gin and table wine.
Entertainment highlights include a show-stopping display by the Drums and Pipes of the Cape Town Highlanders and Ceòl Mhor Ceilidh (pronounced ‘kaylee’) Band.
Award-winning Scottish South African radio personality Guy McDonald of Magic 828AM is the master of ceremonies for this special anniversary event. He’s sure to have a few wee surprises up his sleeve.
