A guide to Table Mountain in peak season
The smartest and most efficient way to ride the cable car
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is one of Cape Town’s most popular experiences and for this reason it gets really busy during summer peak season. So what are the tricks to getting the most out of your visit? Here are five tips:
1. BUY YOUR TICKET ONLINE
First and most important: book online. There are a limited number of tickets sold daily, and to avoid disappointment, buy online before going. Besides the fact that it's the most efficient and convenient way to buy a Table Mountain Aerial Cableway ticket, there's also a newly structured system that enables online ticket holders to skip the queue and jump onto the cable car as soon as you get there. Plus it is the clever option during this period of social distancing.
Pro Tip: Don’t come on the day you want to ride the cable car without a ticket. Book online where you can also check the rates and opening hours.
2. CHECK THE STATUS ONLINE BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT
Online booking has more benefits. There’s a nifty calendar where you can see which days are sold out and which are available; use this calendar to plan your visit.
Whether the cable car runs is entirely dependent on weather conditions. In case of strong winds, the cable car may not be operational. You can also check-out the live queuing status on the website so you can plan ahead. To find out whether the cable car is running, go to the homepage on the website.
3. FIND OUT THE RATES AND OPENING HOURS
The cableway is open every day of the year, including all public holidays. It also runs on extended hours in peak season. From 16 December 2020 until 31 January 2021 it operates from 8am (first car up) to 9.30pm (last car down).

Pro Tip: the cableway can get very busy in the mornings and is generally quieter in the afternoon from 1pm onwards.
4. HERE’S WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU REACH THE TOP
The ride itself is five minutes each way. Once you get up there, you’ll be blown away by the awe-inspiring view 1 089m above Cape Town. That’s understandable, but remember there is lots to do when you are up there. There's also the Table Mountain Café, which serves breakfast or lunch, and has a wine list.
5. CHECK-OUT THE DEALS FOR LOCALS
There are some perks when it comes to being a local. If you’re over 18 and it’s your birthday you can celebrate with a free return ride. Or if you’re a senior citizen over 60, you get a 50% discount on your return ticket every Friday. Plus, students also get a discount on their return or one-way tickets every Friday. Take a look online for the local deals before heading out.
