The cheapest breakfast in Cape Town
Get value for your money at the Castle Coffee Bar – breakfast for R7.50
I believe in the cliché, ‘every student wants to save money’. Wherever you can get something for free or at least for very cheap – students will be there. Being a student myself I checked out the cheapest breakfast in town.
When I arrived at the Castle Coffee Bar on Constitution Street, friendly manager Naadia van Zyl welcomed me. A few minutes later my breakfast is ready, consisting of a fried egg, bacon, tomato, baked beans and toast, all for R7.50. That’s enough for a good start to the day.
"And it’s really the cheapest breakfast in Cape Town," says Naadia with a smile. It’s not only the students from the nearby Technikon and university that tuck into this affordable brekkie, but also backpackers and young professionals in the area.
Their burger menu also attracts locals and tourists because Naadia assures me: "My guests tell me that I make the best burgers in town."
Naadia has worked at the Castle Hotel for more than a year and since the opening of the Castle Coffee Bar in March 2011 also for the café. All dishes are prepared fresh every morning; Naadia tells me she goes shopping each day for fresh produce. All burgers, for example the 'Butterfish Naadia’s Way' are made by her.
Because of the varied, affordable menu, the Castle Coffee Bar is busy all day long. And best of all: after such an inexpensive meal I have enough money left over to go paint the clubs on Long Street red.
