Shipwreck swinger Chris Rogers speaks to CapeTownMag
Chris Rogers; adrenaline junkie, daredevil and adventurist extraordinaire
As Capetonians we love a little adventure - especially if it includes a good view of the ocean, but we’ve never thought of heading to a shipwreck for this. Enter Chris Rogers - who has raised the bar for all the adrenaline junkies out there with footage showing himself and friends swinging from an old shipwreck over the beautiful Atlantic ocean!
We needed to know more so we gave him a call. The first thing we asked, of course, was if he had been terrified before having a go on the makeshift swing, but we were reassured with a soft chuckle that he constantly finds himself doing, “stupid things” like this with his friends.
If you haven’t seen it, the footage shows Rogers and friends flying off the platform on a shipwreck and letting go of the rope, jumping into the crystal blue ocean beneath them. Everyone involved was cautious and the ropes were set up in a safe and stable manner to avoid any injuries - making the courageous backflips off the platform a must for the group.
The man behind the captivating footage is the Cape Town born, passionate Youtube and Instagram sensation, Chris Rogers who started his journey in a seemingly more unconventional fashion than most. Being an avid surfer, snowboarder and all-round typical outdoor-loving Capetonian Rogers was in an accident at 15 years old where he broke both his legs. Unable to compete because of his injury, he took his dad's old camera and photographed his friends who were competing.
Being an athlete himself he knew when the best shots needed to be taken and which angles needed to be used giving him an edge! His legs healed and he bounced back but never lost his passion for the lens. Rogers went on to study a Business Science degree at UCT but decided that he would take a shot at photography and videography. He hasn't looked back since.
From filming music festivals such as Synergy, to traveling all over the world producing mind-blowing footage, and most recently jumping off a shipwreck; there is one question we wanted to ask most of all: where is his favourite spot in Cape Town? Rogers, who doesn’t flinch when doing bmx jumps or jumping off a 10m high shipwreck, hesitated at the question.
The Mother City has far too many places where you can get the greatest footage and just enjoy yourself - but one of Rogers favourite spots at the moment is Chapmans Peak, which he revealed is “mind-blowing”.
