10 Questions For: Claire Winstanley
There is more to this model-turned-chef than meets the eye. After falling in love with food, Claire began her own website and YouTube Channel called ‘Good Looking and Cooking’, where she aims to inspire people to create simple, delicious dishes.
1. How would you describe what you do for a living?
I am an entrepreneur, food stylist, and YouTube video creator. I have a YouTube cooking channel producing shows that are all about original, simple and fun recipes. It’s one of the first of its kind in South Africa. I develop the recipes and present them in a way that makes cooking accessible and enjoyable.
2. What is your most vivid childhood memory?
Spending Christmas in Cape Town (I’m originally from Durban) with my grandparents, eating my Gram’s unbelievably delicious and ridiculously buttery roasted potatoes.
3. If you could invite any three people, dead or alive, for dinner, who would they be and why?
1. James Corden – What a laugh he would be! He’s met just about everyone - his stories would surely keep the conversation going all night.
2. Daniel Humm from Eleven Madison Park in NYC (No.3 in the World’s Best Restaurant ranking) – Daniel is a truly inspiring and knowledgeable chef with ideas that will excite and delight any diner. The mind of a chef is something quite different and I would like to get into his.
3. YouTube co-founder, Chad Hurley – For advice on taking ideas to the next level. He is a true innovator and hopefully a nice guy despite being worth a small fortune.
4. If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why?
There’s zero chance this would ever happen, absolutely no way. This chef and food stylist was made to use her hands not her vocal cords. Although with that said I do like to have a little fun on my channel and torture the ears of my viewers every now and again – I recently attempted a chorus of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York”. It’s bad – you should check it out.
5. How would you complete this sentence? The South African cabinet should include a Minister of _____________
All Things Delicious - and find ways to make them cheaper for everyone to enjoy.
6. What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?
That I think I have it all figured out - Everyday I am learning from the people around me that inspire mend developing my skills and ideas. Starting a new venture is exciting, very scary and ever-changing – you need to know how to adapt and grow.
7. What is your (honest) opinion of Cape Town?
That it really is a (Cape) Town and not a big city – which is the beauty of the place. Capetonians are tight-knit, stick together and very proud of our flat mountain. It’s also the home of the best food in the country - locals demand good food and not just any food. This has really pushed our ‘town’ to explore and adopt exciting culinary establishments.
8. What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today?
Making that first move towards starting my YouTube channel and business (because it really is a business and not a hobby). A silly quote but one I love is, “sucking at something is the first step to becoming sorta good at something,” it’s all about taking the first step. The first step doesn’t necessarily have to be the best or greatest as long as you have an open mind and know how to adapt and move forward with the decisions you make. Being an early pioneer in your own life and goals is very challenging but incredibly satisfying work.
9. What's the one thing you'd like to achieve before you die?
World domination, one donut at a time. Truthfully, long term goals are important and I most certainly have them but I do my best to live in the present and day by day, step-by-step. So right here right now I hope to grow my YouTube channel and continue to create something I am proud of.
10. Which well- known South African personality would you, without a doubt, be able to beat in a street fight and why?
Let’s call it a street food fight – it sounds far less dangerous… and I could definitely beat Jeannie D with my stealth, agility, and pure prowess, but I wouldn’t want to – she’s a real sweetie pie.
