From Rib Eye To Vegetarian – Here Are The Popular New Options At Coco Safar
Gourmet burgers and steak, as well as cocktails, are now on the menu at this all-day cafe in Sea Point
The luxury cafe known for its five-star food has now added gourmet burgers and steak to their menu. And if you’re not a meat eater, no worries, there are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options available.
The burgers include lamb (with tzatziki, pickled beetroot ribbons and wild rocket) and beef (with caramelised onions, melted brie and roasted garlic mayonnaise), as well as a veggie option.
For the carnivores, the steak frites will tempt your taste buds. Get a tender rib eye with beetroot and carrot gel. Add to that an air baguette with sauteed wild mushrooms and micro herbs, pink peppercorn sauce and triple cooked fries.
THE CHEF’S CHOICE
“We are innovating our menu, changing it up,” says head chef Carmen Rueda, who hails from Spain. She has influences from around the world, including Singapore and the UK, and describes the menu as “comfort food with a touch of something different”.
The most unique dish, according to the chef, is the lentil bolognese, which is vegetarian and vegan-friendly as well as gluten-free. Another vegetarian and vegan option is the mushroom risotto, which comprises arborio rice, boletus and button mushrooms and cheese and truffle oil.
“My favourite dish is the Safar Bobotie, which is very South African,” says Carmen, “And the best seller is the smoked brisket sandwich. But I’m in love with the ostrich lasagne.”
STAY FOR DESSERT
Dinner isn't done without dessert and pure decadence is on offer. There's the Parisian-inspired Wicked Affogato, which lives up to its name with Saint-Tropez coffee drizzled over a brownie sponge with hazelnut, chocolate ganache, pink pepper and cardamom cream and macadamia nut ice-cream. The second option is local lekkergoed – their Kaapstad rooibos blend poured over rooibos mousse on a gluten-free sponge, with crystallised orange and orange jam ice-cream. Because who needs a diet?
NEWLY-ADDED COCKTAILS
Choose between 0% alcohol concoctions, from the Green Mojito (featuring green rooibos tea) to the Apple Martini. Otherwise, the Tipping Point (rum, cointreau, red rooibos) or the Napoli Negroni (bitter-sweet breeze ocean gin, campari, vermouth) will put a smile on your face. The cocktail menu is the creation of the “Master of Pleasure” Marshall Siavash, who hails from institutions such as Outrage and Modesty, Cause and Effect, and House of Machines.
