This Cannes Young Directors Award Winner Just Released a Rad New Movie on YouTube [Watch]
Dan Mace teamed up with Youtube superstars to release Getting to 368. A few years before that he spoke to us about his love of film and Cape Town and his fear of street fighting
We interviewed Dan Mace a few years ago when he was still setting his sights on international success. Fresh from winning two awards at the 2016 Young Directors Awards in Cannes (the first African director to do so), Dan told us what drives him to make movies, about his love of surfing, adventure and the city of Cape Town.
He’s been living in New York chasing his dream for filmmaking, and just this week released a short film on YouTube featuring Youtube stars like Luke Veysie and Casey Neistat.
WATCH THE FILM HERE:
We’re super proud to have been featured Dan at the start of this incredible journey a few years ago. Check out our original interview with Dan below.
1. How would you describe what you do for a living?
I make movies to make people smile.
2. What is your most vivid childhood memory?
The first time I stood up on a surfboard.
3. If you could invite any three people, dead or alive, for dinner, who would they be and why?
Darren Aronofsky – In my opinion, he is the greatest film director in the world
Freddie Mercury – To me, he was the best vocalist to ever live and an utter character.
Max Richter - The most musically advanced new-age conductor and composer. His music truly moves me and I would hope to work alongside him one day.
4. If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why?
I would never audition for a music reality TV show, ever.
5. How would you complete this sentence?nbsp; The South African cabinet should include a Minister of ___________
Equality.
6. What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?
It is difficult to truly understand how others see me, but I would say that in my films I always come across as super-positive and eternally happy, but I have just as many lows as I do ups – as any normal person would. I just choose not to showcase the bad, negative stuff and rather give positivity a voice.
7. What is your (honest) opinion of Cape Town?
It’s literally the only city in the world that I want to be born – and die - in. My heart lives in Cape Town.
8. What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today?
Facing the fact that you are going to be rejected more than you are going to be welcomed in. You cannot control other people’s perceptions of you and you have to make films that make you happy before they begin to make your audience happy.
9. What's the one thing you'd like to achieve before you die?
To win an Oscar for the Best Feature Film, of course!
10. Which well- known South African personality would you, without a doubt, be able to beat in a street fight and why?
The last thing in the world that I would want to do is have a street fight with anybody, to be honest! I’m a small guy, so I’m bound to lose, regardless of the candidate.
