Last updated: Friday, 16 February 2024
Ever wanted to pop, lock, or krump? During summer, Concrete Apostle hosts weekly dance sessions at Three Anchor Bay promenade. The best part is it's free and anyone can join (no experience or rhythm required). Here’s everything you need to know about Outdoor Raw Sessions.

BEACHFRONT STREET DANCING
Outdoor Raw Sessions started in 2011, when the Concrete Apostles, a breaking and street dance crew from various locations (like Eerste River and Kensington) was formed. They started hosting outdoor dancing sessions around Cape Town before finding their home at Three Anchor Bay promenade.
Now in its sixth season, it celebrates all styles of dancing like breaking, popping, locking, house, krump, and hip-hop freestyle.
The sessions are hosted bi-weekly by the Concrete Apostles and every other week, you can catch Barry AKA Bear (from the Concrete Apostles) offering his “Bear Necessities of Breaking” training. It happens from November to April every year.
There are several others at the sessions who are sharing knowledge, tips and tricks with newbies or others looking to level up in other styles of dance. Image: Outdoor Raw
LEARN HOW TO DANCE (ANYONE CAN JOIN)
The dance sessions happen every week from 5.30pm until 8.30pm. You don’t need to be a professional dancer to join, or even dance at all. Beginner, intermediate, or advanced, the sessions are purely for fun and no competition is involved (unless you want to challenge another dancer to a 1v1 battle).
The dance circle is open to all and is a total jam session for dancers to freestyle. Everyone who wishes to enter can have a “turn” and exchange with other dancers. It's weather permitting (and usually happens on Wednesdays or Thursdays), so check their Instagram page (@outdoorraw_) on Mondays to see when the next session is.

TRY THE ANNUAL ANNIVERSARY JAM
For those who are interested in joining a dance competition, the Anniversary Jam is an annual street dance festival hosted by Concrete Apostles to celebrate hip-hop culture and the anniversary of their crew.
It usually happens in December (since 2013) over three to four days. There’s a competition where dancers can battle it out in footwork, popping, and house cypers (a freestyle dance jam where people take turns dancing in the centre).
