After a highly successful 2011 Cape Town Carnival during which 60 000 people lined the street and then reveled in Cape Town’s biggest street party, the legendary Carnival returns to Long Street on 24 March 2012. The Carnival parade includes 11 themed Pods with 80 Lead performers in larger than life costumes, 9 richly decorated floats and 11 Academies. Each Academy has 150 community dancers and the Cape Town Carnival brings together 45 community performance groups from 23 different areas in Cape Town. The 3 best lead dancers on the night will travel to Brazil to perform at the 2013 Rio Carnival.
The theme for the 2012 Carnival is “Cape-to-Cairo”, with 9 Floats and approximately 2000 performers celebrating our continent’s creativity with floats, dance, music and inspired performances.
