Bistro lunch at Cascades on the Promenade
Discover the hidden gem that’s serving up some of the Atlantic Seaboard’s tastiest sandwiches, salads and more
From its perch just 50m from the ocean and just a hop, skip and a jump away from Sea Point’s bustling Main Road, Cascades on the Promenade is quietly earning a reputation as one of the Mother City’s go-to lunch spots.
So it comes as no surprise then that the bistro is offering a special winter lunch menu during the chilly season. The deal, which is valid until the end of October 2014 and available between 12pm and 4pm daily, will set you back a mere R95 and although the exact meals available change three times a week, guests can expect either a soup or a salad for starters and anything from a Belgian beef stew with french fries to a special Italian pasta for mains.
And while the exact details of the hearty fare aren’t known, one thing is for sure; guests will always be served what the owners, Luc and Els Deschouwer, refer to as “honest food”.
“Honest food in our opinion starts with using fresh and seasonal ingredients. We don’t cut down on what goes in the pasta, we don’t cut down on the best tomatoes and the best Parmesan cheese...; we only prepare for one day, maybe two days - nothing is frozen or stays in the freezer,” says Els.
Of course, if patrons are not in the mood for what’s on offer on a particular day, there are numerous other tasty options to choose from including a variety of toasted sandwiches, like the expensive-sounding Croque Monsieur with ham, cheese and tangy gherkins and the Toast Exotique, which throws in some banana and pineapple much to the delight of those with a slightly more adventurous palate. Salads range from a pear and gorgonzola combination set off with a rich balsamic reduction to beef carpaccio served with rocket and Parmesan shavings.
But few things will warm you more to the core than the marvellous twice-baked cheese soufflé. Yes, you read that correctly! Supported by a fruit relish and balsamic reduction, the gorgonzola and Gruyère cheese double act will likely elicit a standing ovation (from your taste buds at least).
So considering the upmarket surroundings, killer winter special and the affordable menu, it’s no surprise that Cascades on the Promenade is fast becoming one of the most talked about lunch spots in the Mother City.
