The Cape Epic 2006, the largest full-service mountain bike stage race in the world, will kick off on 22 April 2006 in Knysna.
On that day over 900 mountain bikers from across the globe will gather in the heart of the Garden Route to cycle 900 km all the way to Cape Town. This epic ride will lead these courageous mountain bikers through some of the most magnificent scenery of the Western Cape province of South Africa. One of the highlights of the Cape Epic 2006 route is the 10km stretch through Botlierskop on day 2.
Botlierskop is a Big 5 game reserve in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, home to the African Big. The Cape Epic team rode through the reserve in June and saw a herd of elephants just off the track and numerous varieties of antelope.
The mountain bike riders will climb about 16 000vertical meters during their eight-day-journey. Their eight-day-journey will end on 29 April 2006 at the Spier Wine Estate just outside Cape Town.
