Afrikaburn 2012
The great desert mirage
This year’s Afrikaburn’s theme is ‘Mirage’ – a naturally occurring optical phenomenon in which light rays are bent to produce an illusion of water, people or objects. What is there? What is real?nbsp; And what is pure imagination? Is this a mirror of ourselves? A shimmering reflection. Temporary, transient.
For those of you out of the loop Afrikaburn is an annual festival held in Tankwa in the Karoo dessert. The event is the South African version of the Burning Man festival held annually in Nevada. The concept is that of self reliance and self expression, an art event with the blank canvas of the Karoo gravel on which fantasy is created by it participants. Anything’s possible in Tankwa Town – all you have to do is make it happen.
AfrikaBurn is a community of participants who gather once a year in the Karoo desert in South Africa forming an impermanent city, creating art, building structures and theme camps, wearing costumes, making music and performances and more!
Participation
Everyone is encouraged to create some sort of art work, whether an artist or not you can go as big or as small as you want. All it takes is the will to make something happen. For ideas see the new AfrikaBurn forum on the website below.
