Laurika Rauch Concert at Paul Cluver

Kinders van die Wind singer makes her way to Grabouw’s outdoor theatre for a concert beneath the stars

Renowned Afrikaans songstress Laurika Rauch is set to perform a one-night concert at Paul Cluver wine estate’s forest amphitheatre (roughly one hour from Cape Town) on Saturday, 25 January 2014 as part of the Hope@Paul Cluver summer concert series. This prolific Cape Town singer will serenade audiences with her most popular tunes, including smash hits ‘Kinders van die Wind’ and ‘Op Blouberg se Strand’.

Born in the Mother City suburb of Pinelands, Laurika studied music from the tender age of five and performed for 10 years as part of the Oom Hannes Uys se Kindersangkring choir. Despite describing herself as a quiet child, the singer practised acting and speech, mimicry and elocution as a youngster and went on to study drama in her later years at the University of Stellenbosch.

Though destined to be a performer from an early age, Laurika worked as a children’s sleepwear buyer at a major department store, a teacher and even a waitress before getting her big break. After serving actress and director Katinka Heyns one evening at the restaurant where she was waitressing, Laurika was contracted to be the ‘ghost’ singing voice for TV series Phoenix & Kie.

Following her haunting rendition of Koos du Plessis’s track ‘Kinders van die Wind’, which featured on the soundtrack for the TV show, the song became an instant hit and set the performer on her path to stardom.

Since her initial breakthrough more than three decades ago, the vocalist has produced more than 20 albums – including her greatest hits compilations – toured across the country; performed overseas in Belgium, the Netherlands, London and Prague; and directed her own solo performances as well as that of other singers.

More recently, in 2011 Laurika’s songwriting husband, Christopher Torr, completed a theatrical music production based on his wife’s popular song 'Stuur groete aan Mannetjies Roux'. Laurika starred in the play, and the performance  went on to enjoy a successful run at theatres across the country. In 2013, Torr translated his stage production into a screenplay, and the film version is currently showing at Ster Kinekor Nouveau theatres in Gauteng.

Needless to say, audiences at this Cape Town concert can look forward to a captivating performance featuring some of the famed vocalist’s most notable tracks.

Apart from the spellbinding concert in store, attendees are encouraged to make the most of this memorable occasion and take along a picnic basket, some cushions, blankets and something warm to put on for the cooler nights and get ready for an exceptional event in an  extraordinary venue. Food, drinks and wine will be available for purchase from the various vendors, or patrons can book a gourmet picnic from the estate’s eatery, Fresh Restaurant. Do note, alcohol brought from home will not be allowed into the amphitheatre.

Tickets for the concert cost R280p/p (children pay full price) and are available from all Computicket outlets and Computicket.com. A portion of the proceeds from the concerts will be donated to the Thembalitsha Foundation.

Be aware that there are no ticket pick-ups on the day at the gate; festival-goers must collect their tickets at the Computicket outlets before the event.

Seats are unreserved, so get there early to snatch up the best spots; picnic tables perfectly positioned for prime views of the stage are available at an extra cost. Gates open at 5pm, the concert starts at 7pm and the amphitheatre will close at about 10pm.

Do note that fold-up chairs, tables and prams are not permitted in the amphitheatre.

• Get onto the N2 national highway and cross over Sir Lowry’s Pass.
• Continue passed the Elgin/Grabouw exits and at the Kromco apple packing Co-Op turn left.
• Follow the signs to the Paul Cluver amphitheatre (+- 2km from the Kromco turnoff).
