National Braai Day this Heritage Day
South African's have been urged to get together and Braai4Heritage this Heritage Day
Braai4Heritage is an initiative that calls all South Africans to actively celebrate their common heritage by braaing on National Braai Day, on the same date as Heritage Day, 24 September.
Foreign cultures have various national icons that define their unique personalities. South Africa has the braai.
Braaing is a deep-rooted tradition in South Africa that cuts across all demographic groups. This initiative has the potential to become a contemporary means of celebrating South African-ness, especially considering that braaing is a positive feature in most South Africans' lives.
Cooking food on an open fire is an international phenomenon, but to braai is a truly unique South African past time that penetrates racial, cultural, religious and social boundaries.
National Braai Day provides the opportunity and motivation for all South Africans, (and those who sometimes wish they were South African) to attend and join in the practical and expressive celebrations.
All that is required in order to participate in National Braai Day on Heritage Day is to enjoy a braai with family and friends, and consider the diverse heritage that makes South Africa truly unified.
There is a wonderful variety of Heritage Day events in Cape Town and around South Africa planned for 24 September.
