NSRI Table Bay Summer Open Day
NSRI welcomes you to come and explore their base and get some insight into the inner workings of their valiant industry
Have you ever found yourself wondering what the brave folks at the NSRI have to do on a daily basis? For those of you who don't know what the acronym NSRI stands for, it means National Sea Rescue Institute. Now that we’ve cleared up the basics, you’ll be excited about the opportunity that awaits you this summer.
On Friday, 16 December 2016, at the base next to Quay 4 at the Waterfront, everyone who is curious about NSRI operations or are thinking about a career in sea rescue, this open day is for you. This is by no means limited to adults only, it’s such an interesting and fun spectacle that we would encourage you to bring your kids to experience something stimulating that is both educational and entertaining.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2016 NSRI TABLE BAY SUMMER OPEN DAY
These brave servicemen and women are inviting the public to witness what it takes to be a sea rescue hero. They risk their lives daily against the forces of the powerful ocean to protect and rescue anybody who might find themselves in a perilous situation. These heroes are volunteers and they are working 24-hours a day, 365-days of the year to ensure that any mishaps, which happens in the Table Bay ocean area, are dealt with effectively to ensure that no lives are lost out at sea.
With that being said, visitors can expect to learn some of the techniques that have proven useful out at sea and rescue. For example, volunteers will demonstrate how to fling a heaving line, which is probably a lot harder than it sounds. You will also learn how to perform CPR - definitely a useful technique to have if the need arises. Another awesome opportunity at the NSRI Open Day is being able to try on the gear - a helmet and lifejacket, which is used by the team to ensure that they are safeguarded against any hazardous conditions which might arise furing a rescue operation out at sea.
If you happen to have no plans on the Day of Reconciliation (a national public holiday), then head over to the V&A Waterfront for the NSRI Open Day and bring the entire family along for some entertainment filled with educational value. Needless to mention, there’s going to be tons of fun to be had under the Cape Town sun. See you all there, land lovers.
