Line-up for Oppikoppi: Deftones and Yellowcard Concert in Cape Town
While audiophiles make the trek to the dusty hills, Capetonians get a sneak peek of what festival-goers can expect on the main stage at the three-day fiesta. International acts Deftones and Yellowcard will be joined at GrandWest by a handful of other rocking musos; though, the specifics of the rest of the line-up have yet to be confirmed. - Deftones: The California-based award-winning alternative metal band started out in the late 80s and were among the first groups to pair screaming vocals and heavy riffs with more delicate music and hushed singing. Inspired by innovative rock bands like Tool, Rage Against the Machine and others, the band’s sound evolved from its nu-metal roots to push the envelope by incorporating electro undulations and psychedelic grooves. While the first two albums were both gold certified, they didn’t quite enjoy the same success as their 2000 record, “White Pony”, which peaked at number three in the US Billboard chart with the song “Elite”, winning the band their first Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2001. Since then, the metal group’s status as rock gods was cemented, and with seven studio albums spread across an almost two decade-long career, it’s safe to say that the ensemble’s first ever visit to Mzansi’s shores is long overdue.
- Yellowcard: Formed in 1997 in Jacksonville, Florida, this pop-punk alternative rock quintet is best known for the break-out track, ‘Way Away’, off their third album, “Ocean Avenue”, as well as the same album’s title track, which climbed to the number one spot on MTV’s Total Request Live (TRL) programme. Though, what’s really set this group apart from the rest of pack is the fact that they incorporate the violin into their tracks – an unusual instrument for the genre. After releasing two more albums after “Ocean Avenue”, and despite the band’s increasing popularity and demand, the group went on a hiatus in 2008. After reforming in 2010 with some slight line-up changes, Yellowcard reunited and tackled the studio with more chutzpah than before. Since then, the five-man act has toured extensively and are keen to connect with their patient fans across the globe as well as appeal to a younger generation of music lovers.
