Quad Bike Safari at Aquila Game Reserve
Get up close and personal with South Africa’s animal kingdom on an action-packed four-wheeler game drive
Aquila Game Reserve, which is just a convenient two-hour drive from Cape Town, is the go-to spot for holidaymakers and locals alike looking for a healthy dose of good, old nature and guaranteed sightings of the Big Five. The southern Karoo wildlife haven not only gives guests a chance to get within metres of the animals on standard game drives, but it also provides them the opportunity to ditch the open-top truck and zip through the reserve on an extra exhilarating quad bike safari led by two qualified and knowledgeable rangers.
A favourite of many Aquila visitors, the four-wheeler expeditions are done on 250cc horsepower vehicles that get drivers seriously close to the fauna and flora during the breathtaking experience. While you won’t be chasing down the more ferocious members of the Big Five, you can expect to get a good look at the rhino and elephants, as well as the 7500-hectare property’s less intimidating animals, like zebra, springbok, giraffe and eland.
The guides are clued up and drop interesting titbits about the different creatures, making the safari both a novel way for game drive veterans to take in the sights and sounds of the wild Karoo and a fantastic introduction to African wildlife first-timers.
Either way, taking it all in from atop a quad bike is an activity perfect for channelling your inner adventurer and getting within a couple of springbok hops of South Africa’s beasts of the bush. And as Aquila also offers lodging, if you decide you want to stay the evening, you can also add a quad bike safari to the two standard game drives that come with an accommodation package.
