Shop for ‘That Special Something’ at KIN
You’ll find cool gifts for guys and gals galore at this reservoir of beautiful, locally made art, décor, ceramics, jewellery and more
How do you know you’ve found ‘that special something’? You just do. It’s something you feel - and it has nothing to do with your iPhone, your Android or your Blackberry. It’s not about instant gratification. Where is all this specialness hiding? If you’re in Cape Town, it isn’t. Meet KIN.
Formerly known as The Fringe Arts on Kloof up until November 2013, KIN is where stories are told and also made. In a nutshell, you’ll find a reservoir of South African designed and produced jewellery, accessories, decor, ceramics, prints, art books, toys, cards and limited-edition collections. From bright multi-coloured handmade felt hearts and circles on white cotton string to kudu cushion covers, asymmetric necklaces, funky prints and laptop bags made from PPC cement packets, KIN is home to the creativity coming from local designers dedicated to perfecting their craft.
A colourful and inviting space, the centrally located Kloof Street store is KIN’s flagship shop, but there’s also an online platform for easy aisle-cruising. The city centre location, though, is where owner Chantal Louw – and the rest of the team – go about the day with wide eyes and open minds, never veering from KIN’s focus: to push locally made.
KIN is now five years in to growing local art and design, and the team has never faltered, staying true to its mission to work closely with the designers and keep everything locally manufactured. Chantal’s personal journey is integral to the bigger story: what started as just two individuals (Chantal and her partner in crime, Thessa) building pop-ups and learning the art of winging things has grown and developed into an energized collective. “In the last year we kind of cracked it open and really created something,” smiles Chantal with humility.
The shelves now feature work from over 100 local designers, a family tree that’s always shifting and changing.
One thing that stays the same though is the fact that KIN is where you can finally be that someone who walks away with that ‘special something’. And then come back for more.
