Solo Exhibitions at 99 Loop Gallery
View a mesmerising collection of paintings and photographs at these solo exhibitions
Engage with poignant pieces of art at these solo exhibitions by Ilené Bothma, Katrine Claassens and Tsoku Maela at 99 Loop Gallery from Wednesday, 31 August to Friday, 23 September 2016.
99 Loop Gallery has gathered three vastly different artists to exhibit their solo collections that look at identity and the idea of the ‘self’.
Ilené Bothma’s Veiled Threats exhibition explores the topic of identity and centres on women within a domestic environment using a series of self-portraits. The images touch on issues such as violence and the idea of ‘home’. Ilené uses watercolours and mixed media to portray variations of the self in different circumstances.
Katrine Claassens recreates internet memes and images found on Twitter to illustrate the comfort and escapism found through the web in her collection of paintings named welcome to the internet i will be your guide. Her work consists of many images of animals as well and serves as a commentary on the passing of time and trends online.
Tsoku Maela is presenting his work at 99 Loop Gallery for the second time. His current exhibition, Barongwa: I am that I am, takes a look at the imagery of ancestors and guardian angels in the Sepedi culture. The series of photographs features people painted in bright colours, depicting the guardians Tsoku acknowledged on his journey of self-discovery. “This is a story of us, people, living for others but barely ever getting to know ourselves.”
