The Barleycorn Music Festival
See talented local musicians perform at this legendary folk music club’s 41st anniversary celebration at the Baxter Theatre
Every Monday night for the past four decades, live acoustic and folk musicians have taken to the stage at the Barleycorn Music Club in Claremont. Some of these musicians have grown into national acts, such as David Kramer and Freshlyground, others simply enjoy the space where they can create music. The Barleycorn Music Festival, an annual, family-friendly celebration, returns this year to the Baxter Theatre on Saturday, 30 April 2016 by bringing jams and sing-a-longs from the club’s favourite artists.
In keeping with the occassion’s mission to celebrate up-and-coming artists and local legends, audiences can look forward to performances by show opener Robin Auld, who has released twenty albums to date, as well as husband and wife duo Bottomless Coffee Band, who will perform their toe-tapping blues and folk-rock songs. On top of these acts, concert-goers can look forward to the event’s signature sizzling line-up of homegrown performers, such as Wendy Oldfield, Rowan Stuart, Buck Cannon Blues Band and Black Hats.
If you love the idea of a low-key, volunteer-run music festival with communal jams and beer drinking, then this local music showcase is the perfect way to spend a Saturday night with friends and family.
The Barleycorn Music Club
The principle function of the Barleycorn Music Club is to promote and showcase the best that local music has to offer in an environment that’s a little more band-friendly than usual. Though its unofficial start was in 1975, the club became formalised two years later with official membership, an elected committee and a commitment to the furtherance and promotion of local music. Now it’s somewhat of a Monday night institution for anyone (and everyone) with a love for music, and the festival is another opportunity to keep local music truly lekker.
