The Langa TAG Township Arts Gallery Tour
Take a gander at local creations along this Cape Town township’s first permanent art gallery route
Get a taste of South African history, contemporary art and local culture all in one helping with a visit to the Langa Township Arts Gallery (Langa TAG), which is running daily (except on Sundays) until Thursday, 8 January 2015 as part of the Maboneng Township Arts Experience.
Chosen as one of the World Design Capital 2014 official projects, the unique exhibition is hosted in 10 different homes in Langa, one of South Africa’s oldest townships, where local and international visitors can peruse artists’ creations and talk to the ‘gallery’ owners. Art lovers and casual appreciators can expect to see works from established locals, like Zolani Siphungela, Velile Soha and Patrick Holo, as well learn more about the narratives that underpin the community.
The Maboneng Township Arts Experience is a national public arts initiative and annual festival that aims to create opportunity and awareness of creativity by turning homes in townships into galleries and local outdoor spaces into performance areas. Originally founded by artist Siphiwe Ngwenya in Alexandra in Johannesburg in 2000, the project expanded to the Western Cape in 2012, with the Langa TAG becoming the first permanent art gallery route in the province in 2013. The showcase makes it possible for enthusiasts to visit the area to view exhibitions all year ‘round rather than just during festival time.
