The Vagina Monologues Charity Play
If your vagina could talk, this is what it would say…
Eve Ensler’s courageous, poignant masterpiece is coming to Cape Town on Friday, 26 and Saturday, 27 February 2016 to spread V-Day awareness and raise money for Rape Crisis, MOSAIC and the Western Cape Network on Violence Against Women. The product of interviews with over 200 women, the play is a witty, insightful and empathetic commentary on women’s sexuality and strength.
The play was first published in 1998, and has been performed around the world to critical acclaim. It’s an honest recount of the humour, pain, mystery, wisdom and outrage buried in women’s experiences, with a refreshingly open and sensitive handling of a topic that is often – wrongfully –considered taboo. The award-winning play is used to foster awareness for V-Day, which is a global activist movement that aspires to end violence against women and girls by raising awareness and funds.
Among its countless other philanthropic achievements, V-Day’s ONE BILLION RISING campaign roused over one billion women and men to participate in a global day of action calling for an end to violence against women and girls. The movement continues to gain traction and seems more important than ever in a society that still sees clear mistreatment of and discrimination against its female population.
Why are we so afraid of the word ‘vagina’? Why does saying that word still elicit a giggle, a frown or a blush? Why are we so fearful of the discussing the female experience? This play is all about women owning that word, their bodies and their lived realities. It’s about liberation, and giving a voice to feelings and opinions not previously laid bare. Hearing these stories is by no means an experience that only women should be privy to – both men and women are invited to listen, to share and to act, with the aim of inspiring revolutionary change for women and girls globally.
The production is by the Sugar-daddy Theatre Co. and is directed by Marlisa Doubell. It’ll take place at the location of its sponsor – the Inner City Ideas Cartel – at The Auditorium at 71 Waterkant Street.
