Winter Wine and Food Pairings at Peter Falke in Stellenbosch
Warm your belly with robust reds and savoury snacks at this whimsical boutique winery this cold season
Boutique Stellenbosch-based winery Peter Falke doesn’t just sizzle in summer; it turns up the heat in winter too, most specifically by offering a medley of moreish savoury bites to pair with the rich reds from its two award-winning wine ranges.
From its perch on the picturesque Groenvlei Farm in the Cape Winelands, the exclusive estate is whipping up a series of plates that go perfectly with its vino to help take the edge off the cold season. In particular, the property is serving a cheesy nachos platter with dollops of salsa, fresh guacamole and sour cream, which is best married with a glass or carafe of Peter Falke’s slightly peppery Pinot Noir; a charcuterie spread that features slices of Parma ham, coppa, mortadella and more and is ideal for eating alongside the estate’s full-bodied Syrah or velvety Ruby Blend; and, for those who are just keen to pick, a portion of salami and bread sticks that go down swimmingly with a spot of luscious Cabernet Sauvignon.
Of course, the farm’s popular cheese platters are also on offer – these come with a choice of between one and seven creamy wedges of everything from Gorgonzola and Swiss chèvre to Gruyère and pecorino. Plates of three or more different types are also served with bread, preserves and winter fruits.
When it’s wet and blustery outside, guests can cosy up with their glasses and grub within the sanctuary of the modern wine bar, a space that’s slick, sexy and contemporary, in stark contrast to the 18th-century Cape Dutch-style building it resides in. Otherwise, if the skies are clear, visitors are welcome to enjoy the winter offering in the outdoor tasting lounge, which sits amidst expansive green lawns and is home to mushroom heaters and blankets for when the air is chilly.
Should you wish to tuck into the property’s pairings as an early dinner of sorts, you’re in luck: the winery, which is the passion project of German hosiery giant Peter Falke and his interior designer wife, Danièle Falke, stays open later than most other wineries (until 7pm), so you can even pop by around sunset. The elegant wines can be ordered by the glass, carafe or bottle, and of course you’re welcome to take a case or two home with you to enjoy with your own home-cooked winter meals.
