Fresh: Friday Night Market in the Franschhoek Winelands
Get your Christmas shopping done early this year while the kids are entertained
Fresh oysters, crisp and ice-cold bubbly, aromatic Indian fare, live music and delicious pancakes dripping in sweetness are just some of the pleasures to be had at the Boschendal Friday Night Market. It’s a lovely option to end the week, good for friends wanting to share a glass of wine together or an outing for the whole family (dogs included). The venue is Boschendal’s scenic wine estate, near Franschhoek.
EAT OUT: THERE ARE OPTIONS FOR EVERY FOOD CRAVING
There’s a wide range of food stalls, from The Oyster Guy with spectacularly fresh oysters, flavour-rich and aromatic curries from Aniseed and also Boschendal’s own stalls with homemade snacks from its bakery, fresh produce from the gardens and delicious food prepared by excellent chefs. Some crowd favourites include the Angus beef burgers and wood-fired pizza, as well a bottle of Boschendal wine or a gin cocktail from the Werf Bar stall. For dessert there a lot to choose from, including sweet treats from Pancake Emporium and Wicked Waffle.
GET YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING DONE EARLY
“Starting 20 November, we’ll also have our Festive Pop-up Shop in The Werf Restaurant which will be open during the Night Market. The pop-up features beautiful handcrafted gifting and treats that will make your festive shopping a truly enjoyable experience. Our Christmas Night Market is also something to look forward to on the 23rd of December, complete with gifting stalls and Christmas Carols to get you into the Festive spirit,” says Margerete Van Niekerk from the PR and Marketing department.
GO FOR THE LIVE MUSIC (THE RANGE OF ARTISTS IS WIDE)
The market hosts a variety of local talent, such as the folksy Newton & Co, dreamy songstress Alanna Joy, folk/pop singer-songwriter Matt Carstens, English-Afrikaans outfit Jim Harrison Project and country-style The Betsie Beers. The lineup differs each weekend but always adds an enjoyable atmosphere to the market.
DROP THE KIDS OFF FOR AN OUTDOOR MOVIE OR DRUMMING SESSION
Kids aged five to 14 can be booked in at The Tree House for entertaining supervised activities from 6pm-9pm while parents relax and browse the market. “They’ll be treated to a variety of festive crafts, African drumming and an outdoor movie with popcorn,” explains Margerete. It costs R200 per child and includes food and snacks.
