Spring is when the gardening community of the Western Cape usually opens private gardens to the public and you get the chance to look into some of the region’s loveliest, secret green spaces and be inspired. Numerous gardening and flower expos also happen at about this time, so you can bring this inspiration into reality and buy the plants that caught your eye.
This October, the Fish Hoek Garden Club presents the False Bay Gardening Expo and Flower Show at the Fish Hoek Civic Centre on 12 October.
A CUT ABOVE THE REST
Meteorologists say Cape Town still needs to be waterwise, so we should all be getting very interested in succulents. The pleasure of this is that there are so many varieties of this species, and they do well in Cape. Another bonus: they are resilient (good to know for those of us that have managed to kill one – be honest, most of us have). The show will be exhibiting a wide range to choose from.
There’s also a Clivia show throughout the day, and a bonsai and orchid auction at 2pm, which will be facilitated by local artist Andrew Hart. And it’ll be a good time to stock up on herbs, or seeds to grow your own fruits and vegetables. And for the Instagrammer that hides in us all, a section of the expo is all about cut flowers (indigenous and exotic) and flower arrangements.
SIGN ME UP, BUTTERCUP
To partake in the expo, give Sally Britten a call on +27 (0)21 785 2386. Stalls cost R50 per 2m x 2m space. Your booth can be anything from environmental awareness to nursery representative to owner of homemade jams, cheeses, and art.
Note: Credit card facilities will be made available to patrons.
