GOLDEN DISH
Always and forever Golden Dish in Athlone. So says reader Charl Fourie. “Even just for the memories.” The long-time, family-run institution sells an incredibly diverse range of gatsbys, from a goulash full house to masala steak, which is Petronella Naran’s favourite. “Yassssesss makes me want to go there now.”

COSY CORNER
Founded in 1973 by the Hartley family, Cosy Corner has been a gatsby staple in Wynberg for half a century. The halaal eatery is the only takeaway store in Cape Town that makes a flame-grilled rump steak gatsby. It’s so popular that it received the most votes from our readers. Cecily Misrole-Cridland swears by the quality, saying it “never disappoints”
Hours: Monday to Sunday, 9am - 11pm
MARIAM’S KITCHEN
Not only is this sandwich hotspot conveniently located in the CBD (there are two stores), Mariam’s also makes a killer full house steak gatsby. “Their masala steak gatsby is the best. We usually buy it and then go up to Signal Hill. And the combo of good food and great views is such a winner,” says Annette Willmers.
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8.30am - 5pm; Saturday, 9am - 4pm

CUT-IN-2
Pulled pork gatsby and crayfish gebba – two dishes that stand out for our readers at Cut-in-2. Robyn Wyngaard even went as far to say that it has the best pulled pork Gatsby she’s ever tasted. The Bergvliet shop even has spitbraai’d lamb gatsbys and Southern fried chicken.

CAPE TO CURRY
From plain chips to butter chicken, spicy mutton curry, and even a cheese or chicken burger gatsby, Cape to Curry has a little bit of everything. The go-to is a spicy (and very cheesy) masala steak gatsby, “if you are lucky enough to get one,” says Mpono Asanda.
Hours: Tuesday, 12pm - 5.30pm; Wednesday & Thursday, 11am - 5.30pm; Friday & Saturday, 11am - 6.30pm
SUPER FISHERIES
“Of course, the OG of gatsby... Super Fisheries,” says Aldridge Wippenaar. The unassuming Super Fisheries shop in Athlone is owned and run by Rashaad Pandy, reputed to be the inventor of the original Gatsby, so you can expect authentic subs here. Their focus is on fish and calamari-filled super sandwiches, but they still sell Rashaad’s OG combo: Polony, chips and achar.
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8.30am - 6pm; Saturday, 8am - 3pm

FISHERMAN'S DEN
A gatsby spot of note to reader Abdus-salaam Camroodien is Fisherman's Den in Bellville. According to Abdus-salaam, the gatsbys aren’t your average size, but slightly larger and filled to capacity. “They even promise a no more than 5 minute wait time. Now that’s service.”
Hours: Monday to Saturday, 9am - 8pm; Sunday, 11am - 6.30pm
