Oktoberfest (And German Christmas Market) In Hermanus For The Whole Family
Dress in your lederhosen and dirndl, dance to the oompah band, bring the kids and enjoy German specialities
In a town renowned for the Whale Festival, Kalfiefees and Fynarts, organiser René Hartslief decided to do something totally different. The inaugural Hermanus German Festival parades into Hermanus five days before Christmas on Friday, 20 December.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Come and enjoy the Hermanus German Festival and be sure to wear your traditional German folk dress such as lederhosen and dirndl because there will be best-dressed prizes up for grabs. For the children, there will be pony rides an amusement centre with a jumping castle, train rides, popcorn, candyfloss and more.
A German oompah band promises to create an authentic Beerfest feeling as the musicians will play traditional and contemporary German music on stage.

TRADITIONAL GERMAN FOOD
You can’t have Oktoberfest without the perfect accompaniment to beer: large soft pretzels (brezen). Other beer hall classics will also be available like crispy roasted pork knuckles (schweinshaxe) and Bavarian pork shoulder or loin, roasted with dark beer and cider (schweinebraten).
Main meals include spit-roasted chicken rubbed with lemon-and-thyme butter, flammkuchen, smoked pork ribs, pulled pork buns to name just a few.
Of course, there will be German sausages like bratwurst, knackwurst, currywurst and frankfurter. Plus desserts will include lebkuchen, pannekoeken, Christmas cakes, cupcakes, pear strudel, black forest brownies and more.
Apart from all the German cuisine, you can also enjoy a large variety of award-winning craft beers and enter many beer-drinking competitions. You’ll also be able to find schnapps, witblits, grappa, mampoer, liqueurs, wines, MCC, ciders, craft gins, beer and lemonade mixes (radler), and wine and soda mixes (weinschlore) and a lot more at the bar.
HAND-MADE GIFTS
Do your last-minute Christmas shopping and choose from a variety of glassworks, leather goods, jewellery and a great selection of arts and crafts.
SHUTTLE SERVICE
A number of taxis will collect and drop off passengers for a small fee from the different areas in Hermanus and surrounds so that people don't have to drink and drive.
