This month at Dutchies, the beachside eatery in Hermanus
Jazz every last Friday, Indonesian rijstafel every first Thursday and fresh croissants any day you like
Dutchies, the seaside restaurant on Hermanus’ Grotto Beach that has been an 8-year mainstay for locals, has a lot going on every month.
FIRST THURSDAY IS INDONESIAN CUISINE
Every first Thursday of the month Dutchies puts on an Indonesian rijstafel. This is a Dutch tradition (owners Joke and Daan Gonggrijp are from the Netherlands, hence Dutchies) dating back from the days of the Dutch East Indies Company, which returned from its seafaring travels with unfamiliar flavours and dishes.
The rijstafel became a way to show and experience the Indonesian flavours and spices with dishes such as nasi goreng, explains manager Russ Witte-Riding. Dutchies continues that tradition (Joke experienced this with her own mother) serving plain and spicy rice together with a plethora of dishes from curried green beans to chicken satay.
LAST FRIDAYS IS JAZZ NIGHTS
On the last Friday of the month is jazz evening. The acts are usually from out of town and vary, and a three-course set menu is offered on the night (there are choices for each course). It’s important to book for both events, which are very popular and seating gets taken up quickly.
FRESH DAILY BREAD AND CROISSANTS
And every day you can eat fresh-from-the-oven almond, pecan or chocolate croissants, baked goods and bread from the new feather in co-owners Daan and Joke Gonggrijp’s cap, Daan’s Bakery.
You can enjoy the bread at home, but we recommend that you stay for any and all your meals. There’s a choice of three seating areas there: inside the restaurant, which at night is lit with candles; the courtyard, where wooden tables under umbrellas are set out around an ancient milkwood tree; and the breezy outside ‘porch’ areas to the front and sides, which has generously spaced low tables and comfy chairs. Wherever you choose to sit, you can kick back and relax; you won’t be rushed at Dutchies Beach Restaurant.
