Treehouse eatery with a secret nightclub
CLOSED: Take me to Church Street for bourbon milkshakes and cheese steak sandwiches
Last updated: Tuesday, 11 April 2023
Just off Bree Street you'll find a treehouse-looking eatery – a sandwich lover’s paradise and a milkshake haven that will even get adults excited (think bacon, bourbon and peanut butter). And at 8pm the eatery turns into a full-blown club. If that’s not cool enough – the restroom has a party button, turning the room into a disco dance floor. This is Safehouse.

DISCOVER THE TREEHOUSE EATERY
Safehouse is the newest hottie on Cape Town’s nightlife scene. The eatery overlooks Church Street, with a wooden deck hanging in between large trees. The greenery wraps around the 4-seater tables, with hanging and pot plants all around – magnifying the treehouse vibe. At the back of the restaurant is a vault door, concealing a sexy secret (read more below).

GET SANDWICHES AND BOURBON MILKSHAKES
Safehouse has its own version of the classic Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. The Cape Town Cheese Steak is made with slow-cooked beef short rib, mushrooms, cheese and red onion marmalade (vegetarian option available too). Other hits on the menu include the Crispy Asian Cauliflower Wings, the house salad and, of course, the adult milkshakes.
Each sandwich comes with a side of fries and a sauce of your choice (we recommend the Safehouse gravy). Image: Andy Turner-Dauncy
You can’t go to Safehouse without trying one of the bourbon milkshakes (made with Jack Daniel’s). There are five options to choose from – the Double Choc Double Shot, Jacked-Up Berry Jam, Caramel Ginger Crunch, Espresso Martini (with Oreos) and the 10-Out-Of-Tennessee (with bacon and peanut butter). You can also order a non-alcoholic version of the shakes.
There’s also a selection of beers, wines and cocktails available. Image: Andy Turner-Dauncy
UNLOCK THE HIDDEN NIGHTCLUB
Behind the vault door, at the back of the restaurant, you’ll find a moody corridor leading you into the secret nightclub, which can fit up to 200 people. Cherry orchards hang from the ceiling, while a red “I licked it so it’s mine” neon sign lights up the large booths. Safehouse’s club hosts a number of events, from student nights to kink parties, organised by the creative director of Safehouse and well-known South African DJ, Das Kapital. Get a sneak peek of the inside of the club.
