SA Horse Racing at Kenilworth Racecourse Cape Town
Your complete guide to the 2016-2017 equestrian fixtures and events in the Mother City
As much a part of summer in Cape Town as hikes up Table Mountain and beach days at Clifton, horse racing at the Kenilworth Racecourse is a sure sign that the warmer season is in full swing.
As one of only 10 race tracks in South Africa and two in the Western Cape (the other being Durbanville Racecourse), the storied venue is the oldest of its kind in the region and home to some of Mzansi’s most prestigious horse racing events.
This suburban track boasts a heady line-up of high-stakes races, trophy cups and family friendly festivals each year. As in the past, lovers of these stylish events can look forward to the return of chic to-dos, like the J&B Met and the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.
So, whether you’re a hardcore horse racing enthusiast, elite socialite or regular Joe looking to score big on champion steeds, you’ll find a gallop that’s good for a great day in the summer sunshine. We’ve included some of the highlights below.

ABOUT THE KENILWORTH RACECOURSE IN CAPE TOWN
The Kenilworth Racecourse is a historic patch of land situated amidst the hustle and bustle of the Southern Suburbs. A seasonal wetland, the track is home to the most preserved section of Cape Flats Sand Fynbos in the world. The 52-hectare nature reserve hosts hundreds of fauna species with at least 20 of these species appearing on the endangered list. What’s more, the reserve supports a small but healthy community of reptiles, birds and small mammals, including the critically endangered micro frog and Cape platanna frog. Besides the endemic species, there are two plants listed as extinct in the wild that have been introduced to the area for conservation.
