Comedy Club Opens The Stage To Jazzy Improv
Think you have the musical chops to jam with the city’s top jazz musos?
Want to test out your musical chops? On Tuesday nights, anyone can bring along their instrument to Cape Town Comedy Club and – if you’re brave enough – join jazz ensemble Alvin Dyers Trio on the stage for some improv. Or just come along and be part of a light-hearted session where there’s vibrant interaction between performers and audience.
YOU’LL BE PLAYING WITH TOP JAZZ MUSOS
The Alvin Dyers Trio is headed up by iconic Cape Town guitarist Alvin Dyers, who also teaches jazz at the South African College of Music at UCT. Roy Davids has performed with other local legends such as Tony Schilder, and has played percussion for Dyers for years. Valentino Europa, who played with the Cape Town Jazz Orchestra under the leadership of the acclaimed Abdullah Ebrahim, is on bass.
In the Jazz Jam Sessions, musicians usually use a well-known jazz standard as a base to work from and then improvise on that, says Comedy Club Manager Desiree McKie. Entry to the club is R60, but jam sessions are open, free and spontaneous. “It is completely unrehearsed and so there is a strong element of risk and surprise; anything could happen.”
The sessions are made up of three sets: set one is a performance by the trio, and two and three are for the jam sessions.
BOOST YOUR COURAGE WITH TEQUILA AND PIZZA
The Cape Town Comedy club has a pizza-only menu on these evenings. Toppings range from vegetable to chicken, and gluten-free bases are available. You can also get a tequila shot for R18 and a pint of the in-house Jou Ma Se Brew for R50.
GETTING INTO THE COMEDY CLUB
Tickets cost R60 and can be booked at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers stores or at the door (subject to availability). The show starts at 8:30pm and dinner starts at 6pm.
