Koeberg Safety Exercise On The Cards
The Mother City will participate in the National Nuclear Regulator’s (NNR) emergency safety exercise.
Last Updated: 8 November 2016
On Wednesday, 9 November, the Mother City will partake in a National Nuclear Regulator’s emergency safety exercise. The purpose of the exercise is to test the efficiency of the Radiological Release Hazard Disaster Risk Management plan. The exercise is planned to confirm that public safety arrangements are in place in the event of a nuclear emergency.
It will include the relevant role players from the Western Cape government, the National government and Eskom. The development will examine the different stages of emergency, including evacuation plans; mass care centres, transport arrangements, decontaminations, and the distribution of potassium iodate tablets.
POTENTIAL ROAD CLOSURES DURING THE NATIONAL NUCLEAR REGULATOR SAFETY EXERCISE
This could also affect traffic in Cape Town as the NNR requires that a roadblock be held on one of the following roads:
- R27 West Coast Road and Silverstream Road
- R27 West Coast Road and M14 Melkbosstrand Road
- R304 and Philadelphia Road
- N7 and Melkbosstrand Road
The NNR will only disclose the exact location and time that the exercise gets under way on the morning of the implementation.
Residents in the area of Koeberg should not be alarmed if they hear sirens during the course of the day.
