Historic Walk at La Motte in Franschhoek
Discover interesting history and heritage of the Franschhoek area on the La Motte estate in the Cape Winelands
La Motte is known as the producer of some of South Africa’s finest wines, from the La Motte Shiraz to the La Motte Pierneef Sauvignon Blanc, and the La Motte Chardonnay, their selection is top-class. But vino lovers may be unaware of the rich history and culture that filters its way through the wine, art, and food on the estate and in the district. La Motte invites visitors to their estate to discover the history of the Franschhoek Valley by joining them on a historic walk.
La Motte is situated in the heart of Franschhoek, where history and culture greet you with a breath of fresh air. Upon entering the estate, the atmosphere is as beautiful as it is peaceful – a welcomed break from the busy city. We drive past the green pastures and vines, to the reception area of La Motte where we are greeted by the friendly staff who lead us to the La Motte Museum, where the walk starts.
WALK THROUGH A ROSE GARDEN
Before the walk commences, the well-informed guide briefs participants on the history and heritage of the estate. History enthusiasts will particularly enjoy this very informative session. The walk then proceeds to La Motte’s radiant rose garden, which features 19 different species of the perennial flowering plant, including the Hybrid Tea rose, or KORsebue, named after La Motte owner and renowned mezzo-soprano, Hanneli Rupert.
Next, we move on to gaze at and appreciate the four national monuments that grace the Franschhoek Valley landscape. First stop is the La Motte Manor House, which was built in 1751 and on which the initials of the original owners, Gideon Jacobus Joubert and his wife Susanna Francina Retief, can still be seen. The Jonkershuis is next and is a spectacular building, believed to be the second oldest on the estate. From there, the walk goes to the La Motte Historic Cellar, which was built in 1782. In here, you’ll be captivated by the remnants of traditional winemaking processes, paired with sophisticated modern décor and design.
Lastly, the walk takes you to the Water Mill, which is the only working watermill of its kind in the Franschhoek Valley. This scenic walk is concluded with an artisan bread tasting at the Pierneef a La Motte restaurant.
