Every major city has quality gentlemen's clubs. In Atlanta it’s Magic City. In Cape Town that honour belongs to Mavericks, the premium club with a legendary history (20 this year).

START WITH EARLY DRINKS, LET NIGHT TAKE YOU

You’ll want to get to Mavericks early, and on Friday, they open at 3pm, which makes it a great spot for after-work drinks. There’s a live DJ maintaining the vibe with a great mix of familiar dance hits, upbeat techno and groovy hip hop. 

On Fridays and Saturdays, the DJ pauses twice a night to make way for the special stage shows, such as a steamy burlesque routine.

You’ll know it’s about to begin when swinging music of the roaring ‘20s fills the room. A giant cake is wheeled out into the middle of the main lounge, with spotlights on the centrepiece as the rest of the club goes dark. Suddenly, a stunning dancer in classic red lingerie emerges from the cake, and, with impressive agility, extracts herself from the confectionery.

BE ENTRANCED BY BEAUTIFUL DANCERS

With unmatched poise and grace, the dancer picks up two giant fans made from ostrich feathers dyed velvet red. She has everyone in the house focused on her every move.

Over the next ten minutes the spotlights linger on her moving around the room as the music builds to a crescendo. Finally she disappears behind the feathers in her hands, and somehow makes her lacey lingerie vanish - and then re-emerges to an enthusiastic round of applause.

GET A VIEW OF THE MAIN STAGE, FROM ANY SEAT

It’s the attention to detail that impresses about Mavericks. The leather couches, the plush carpets, the floor to ceiling velvet curtains, the dimly lit pyramid-shaped bar shelves and the cleverly integrated floating dance area above the bar. 

Though there’s multiple areas and bars, it’s designed and decorated so that every space is intimate and luxurious. The ground floor has the most seating with a variety of dinner tables and couches. Every seat has a view of the main dance area, which the dancers reach via a walkway above the bar, which in itself is captivating to watch.

The food menu has been adapted with more small plates and tapas. There’s nibbles like the  basted chicken lollipops, but also an extensive sushi menu, with everything prepared fresh. There’s three well-stocked bars - you’re almost certain to find your favourite wine, whisky or cognac here.

VIP entry elevates the Mavericks experience. It’s recommended you reserve a spot (these seats are popular). The distinguished area upstairs begins with a mezzanine with a commanding view of the main dance area. The mezzanine also features private booths and low cocktail tables.

BE ENTHRALLED BY DANCERS IN GILDED BIRD CAGE

Up another small staircase is many guests’ favourite part of the club, the main VIP lounge. It’s opulent, with red velvet curtains stretching to the roof all around the room. In the centre are a few low couches and tables, with a swing hanging inside a giant gold birdcage in the middle of the room, in which the dancers perform. The dancers seem to revel in performing here and with private bathrooms and a private bar at the back of this lounge, it all comes together to make you feel like royalty.

CHECK INTO THE LIBRARY FOR EXCLUSIVE USE

The classy Library is just off the side of the VIP area and is even more exclusive, with a private entrance. You’ll feel like kings of a well-attended castle with private stage doors to private dance booths cleverly built into the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. This area, attended to by hostesses exclusive to theLibrary, can be booked for exclusive use.

The Empire Lounge, on the ground floor, is like a luxury grand saloon in a Hollywood Wild West movie. Quieter than the main floor, it’s perfectly set up for bachelor or bachelorette parties; featuring its own bar and areas which can be curtained off that feature a private dance pole.

Entrance: Basic entrance R100. Entrance to the VIP part is an extra R300p/p. The Library is R1000 entry.

Prices: Dance prices R300 for two songs table dance; R300 for a lap dance; and R750 for a VIP dance.
