The wedding season has begun, and if, like me, you are always a guest and never a groom, then you will relate to my wedding wardrobe challenge, namely: what to wear. Like me, I’m sure you get by with creative combinations mixed and matched from an existing wardrobe, so you don’t end up in every wedding album wearing navy trousers and a white shirt. But the terrain changes somewhat when you find yourself at the end of an aisle beaming at a bride. Your hard-working, but by now probably quite sad-looking, jacket and trouser combo most likely won’t cut it.

This sets the tone for a groom’s special day, as this is custom-made shopping at its very best – no queues or crowds and a one-on-one styling session at a location of the husband-to-be’s choice. To really make the process even more memorable and enjoyable, the groom could generously opt to include his best man and groomsmen and fit them out in custom-made MORE suits too.

So what suit is best for a wedding day? “It is really up to the individual and his specific taste,” Jorg says, “but because it is a special occasion, try not to opt for a very conservative look. Try something a little daring and quite luxe, like an electric blue or blue-grey suit.” A little daring doesn’t mean garish and loud though, as Jorg suggests that the most stylish grooms opt for a “less-is-more approach, with a quietly chic presentation providing the wow factor on this momentous day.” Also, if the suit is too flashy, you will only be able to wear it once. In truth, there isn’t really a difference between placing an order for a wedding suit or an investment suit – unless you choose to go with the slightly more festive wedding-themed linings and trims that Jorg liberally stocks. It’s the attitude of the groom that sets wedding suits apart. “There is an emotional aspect to these fittings and consultations, an expectation filled with excitement for the groom – and the bride too, of course – as it’s a huge day in their lives… and they have to wait to see the results,” Jorg muses.

Has Jorg ever had any crazy requests? “Not yet!” he exclaims, adding that his sole aim is to make every client that uses MORE’s services look and feel good. “The only real challenge I am presented with is making a difficult posture look good. That’s the magic of custom-made suits – even if you are thin in the chest or have a beer belly, the way the shirts and suits are crafted delivers flawless results and makes for very happy customers.”   

Tip: When ordering a suit through MORE, think about ordering a second pair of trousers, preferably in the same fabric. Jorg mentions that, as these suits are custom-made and last a lifetime (depending if you stay in relatively the same shape!), the first thing to go will be the trousers, especially at the knees. 

The bill: The average ballpark figure for a MORE suit is between R10 000 and R12 000, and the custom-made shirts – they’re from one of the best weaveries in the world, Thomas Mason – retail at around R2 000. All prices for shirts and suits are fabric and trim dependent.
