Flagship Brew Taproom and Brewery in Riebeek Kasteel
Embark on a journey to taste, explore and discover flavourful craft beers at this new out-of-town brewery
“At the heart of it is family, and that’s what makes us different” explains Owen Ingarfield, the son in the family behind Riebeek-Kasteel’s newest brewery and bar, Flagship Brew. The quaint spot’s primary aim is to share with craft beer enthusiasts what the Ingarfields hold close to their heart; brewing good, tasty beer.
The brewery is in a charming old Victorian house on Church Street – one of the town’s main arteries – and this new spot is all about passion-filled brewing and tantalising beers. And what’s even better is that it can be enjoyed in a location that invites folk to soak up the summer sun amidst the beauty and allure of the historical town.
Flagship Brew has four signature beverages; there’s the New World Lager, a balanced, easy-to-drink German-style Lager; the Summer Ale, which is a blonde ale with a slightly heavier build and an easy-drinking feel; the Red Valley, an ale with caramel and nut flavours; and the Siren IPA, a dry-hopped concoction that features citrus, floral and other fruity notes fit for the seasoned beer drinker. And then there are the surprise experimental beverages that will grace the taproom to keep the offering fresh and exciting. There’s even a non-alcoholic ice tea for kids (or teetotallers!).
“I remember my dad used to brew beer back when I was still a kid,” says Owen. But after a while, Owen’s dad put a halt to brewing, only for the craft to be picked up by Owen again years later, in turn inspiring his father to take up brewing once again. Now, after many months of preparations, creating unique concoctions, and solidifying the brand identity, Flagship Brew is inviting anyone who is looking to be a part of a flavourful journey to hop on board.
All the flavours come together to create a dynamic profile that takes patrons on an adventure, which is a core theme of the establishment. “We want people to come and discover different and exciting flavours with us,” explains Owen. In fact, Owen says that on top of their core theme they want to encourage people to explore the town of Riebeek-Kasteel: “This beautiful town is great for a day outing, and it’s perfect because it’s less than an hour’s drive away from Cape Town.”
Transparency and authenticity is important to Flagship Brew. As such, the first thing guests will see when they walk in is the equipment used for brewing, and Owen invites all beer enthusiasts to not only enjoy their bespoke selection of beers but also to interact with the brew master (his father).
Looking to the future, the brewery and bar is keen to partner with local businesses to provide snack platters for patrons, to host monthly Saturday events, to offer tasting sessions and lots more. This family-run brewery is definitely one to watch.
