Collect fresh water at the Newlands Spring
The Newlands Spring is open 7 days a week, from 5am to 9pm
Grab a container and head to the popular Newlands Spring, where you can collect fresh water for free. It has recently reopened with new safety regulations in place, and is a great way to save water - and cut down on plastic use.
OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK
The spring is situated on the northern side of the Newlands Swimming Pool, near the Dean Street Shopping Centre. You can visit every day of the week from 5am to 9pm. The spot is known for its high quality water and was a sought-after water source during the peak of Cape Town’s drought in 2018. Even though the city’s dam levels have recovered, many people still continue to make use of the spring.
THE WATER IS USED TO MAKE BEER
The Newlands Spring has played an important role in the brewing industry. South Africa's first licensed brewery was established in the area at Papenboom in 1694. Today, Newlands Spring Brewing Company uses the water in their craft beer. The spring’s water was also used to power water mills from the mid-1800s onwards.
Note: This water is not treated, so the City of Cape Town cannot guarantee that it’s safe for drinking.

Keep up to date with Cape Town’s dam levels.
After you’ve fetched your water, there are plenty of other things to do this week.
This is what else you can get up to during lockdown level 3.
