Cape Town introduced free bus rides!
Unemployed Capetonians aided by MyCiTi Bus Services
Last Update 5 June 2017
Cape Town may be in a tricky spot with the drought and the cold front setting in, but it hasn't stopped The City of Cape Town from creating new initiatives to help the people of the city. In an announcement made in May 2017, Mayor Patricia de Lille has allocated R6.6 million to subsidise free bus rides to unemployed Capetonians.
De Lille announced this initiative whilst announcing the city’s R44.3 billion budget on 30 May 2017. The decision was made in an attempt to aid job seekers in promoting access to transport to, “ enable them to access opportunities”.
De Lille stated that, “many people are giving up looking for work because travel costs are a barrier. We want to implement this initiative to take away that obstacle of travel costs which sometimes prevents people from being able to access job opportunities.”
Capetonians can expect the subsidy to be implemented from the end of September 2017. Commuters travelling between 10am and 3.30pm daily who have the MyCiTi myconnect card will be able to travel for free. This is specifically aimed at job seekers, in an attempt to create and enable an environment for economic growth.
