Bonginkosi Madikizela named DA Interim Leader
New appointment for the Democratic Alliance as De Lille takes on new challenge
Last Updated February 27, 2017
Following the resignation of the Western Cape Democratic Alliance Leader, Mayor Patricia de Lille on January 30 2017, the party’s deputy leader Bonginkosi Madikizela has been elected interim leader. De Lille’s move to resign comes as the DA-run City of Cape Town embarks strategies which are said to emphasise the aim of improving service delivery and equality within the Western Cape.
Madikizela was elected at a council meeting in Worcester in the Boland on February 25, 2017. Madikizela will lead the party until the next Democratic Alliance Western Cape elective congress, taking place August 12, 2017. “I feel very humbled and overwhelmed by this confidence my colleagues have shown in me,” Madikizela told the media after the council.
“On behalf of the DA in the Western Cape, I wish to congratulate Bonginkosi Madikizela on being elected to lead the party in the province. We look forward to working together in delivering on our record of progress and job creation in the Western Cape.”, DA provincial chairperson Anton Bredell said on 25 February 2017.
The resignation of De Lille will place a higher demand on her existing role as DA-elected Executive Mayor. De Lille had decided to focus her attention solely on this role to ensure that the vision of job creation, righting the injustices of the past and improving the conditions of those affected by these inequalities comes to fruition.
