West Coast rustic-style padstal you don’t want to miss
Fill up your car, order a fresh roosterkoek and moerkoffie in a tin mug at this rustic eatery

Just off the R27 in Yzerfontein, you’ll find an unassuming petrol station. Look just beyond, you’ll see a bright blue container. Roll down your windows, and the smell of freshly baked roosterkoek on the fire will be enough to entice you to make it a pit-stop.

DISCOVER THE WEST COAST AESTHETIC
A wooden sign mounted above the entrance welcomes you to Route R27 Roosterkoek, a rustic eatery perfect for hungry travellers. It has a simple tarpaulin-covered seating area with wooden benches and bar stools set over pebbles. A collection of old, worn-out fishing gear (in keeping with the West Coast aesthetic) is scattered around the edges and draped across the side of the entrance walls.
CHOSE FROM 16+ FILLINGS
Right next door to the seating area is a long fire pit where the roosterkoek (bread dough cooked over coals) are freshly baked. At the far end of the seating area, you’ll find the blue container, with a large, cut-out window, where you place your order. There are a host of fillings on offer, from simple butter to boerewors and relish. Popular fillings are curry mince, chicken mayonnaise and cheese and jam. There’s also a small selection of pies.
There are more than 16 fillings to choose from, plus a kids menu available. Image: @tamlynamberwanderlust
While waiting for your freshly baked goods, order a cup of moerkoffie (coffee made from ground coffee in a simple enamel or aluminium coffee pot on a stove or even better, over an open fire) served in a tin mug. Or for something sweeter, there’s mocha, hot chocolate and soft drinks.
ADD BILTONG TO YOUR PADKOS
Padkos is a must when road tripping, ask any South African. So it’s worth exploring what else there is on offer. Just to the left of the entrance you’ll find a small shop dedicated to another South African favourite, biltong and droewors.
It also sells creamy soft-serve ice-cream (we suggest eating it before you carry on with your road trip, though). Image: @sarah.j.jarvis
On the opposite side of the biltong shop, inside a brown container building is a classic souvenir shop, filled with West Coast memorabilia, gifts, clothing and even tin mugs to remember your trip. Or pop next door for freshly baked farm bread, jams, preserves and juices.
