Rocky Horror Show at the Fugard Theatre
The timeless musical returns to Cape Town to give fans another round of racy theatrics
It seems that you really can’t have too much of a good thing, especially if that thing involves fishnets, big wigs and the ‘Time Warp’. That’s right; owing to massive popular demand, the Fugard Theatre is bringing Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show back to the Mother City for another run, from Tuesday, 22 July to Sunday, 2 November 2014.
The nine-time 2014 Fleur du Cap Theatre Award-nominated production recently tied up 10 weeks of sold-out performances in Johannesburg, and now talented young director Matthew Wild and his madcap gender-bending ensemble of South African actors and actresses look to make the kitsch classic’s camp combination of comedy, horror and unforgettable music more entertaining than ever.
Brad and Janet need no introduction as the freshly engaged couple who happen on some car trouble. As a result, the unknowing duo stumbles upon the home of Dr Frank N. Furter, a mad scientist and transvestite whose latest creation is the strange and wonderfully muscular Rocky Horror. A sexy, saucy adventure ensues, with hits like ‘Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me’, ‘Science Fiction/Double Feature’ and ‘Dammit Janet’ peppering the performance with legendary melodies.
Needless to say, whether you caught Rocky Horror Show the first time it was in town or have yet to witness the spectacular magic, all it takes is a jump to the left and a step to the right (with your hands on your hips) to get into the contagious spirit of this much-loved adult musical. Oh, and don’t forget to dress the part; audience members are invited to get in full gear in support of the play. Not to mention, since there’s no holding back when it comes to the production, participation packets will be available at each performance to complete the one-of-a-kind experience.
