Table Mountain National Park is open under alert level 3

Dust off your hiking boots and head for the hills

Please note: As of 6 June 2020, Lion's Head is closed again until further notice. 

On Saturday, 30 May Minister of Tourism Kubayi-Ngubane announced that some parts of the tourism sector would open up, including hiking trails and game drives. That means hiking is back on the cards for Capetonians under alert level 3.  Before you dust off your boots and pack the car here's what you need to know. 

TABLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK IS OPEN

Table Mountain National Park is huge, and most of it is open as of 1 June. There are a few exceptions: Boulders Beach, Cape Point, Silvermine Gate 1 and 2, Upper Tokai, and all picnic sites will remain closed. Lion's Head is also closed. 

However, some favourites are open and ready to welcome hikers. These include Newlands Forest, Tokai Forest, as well as the Table Mountain hikes we know and love. 

HIKING IS ALLOWED, BUT NO GROUPS
Because of social distancing measures to avoid the spread of the coronavirus, you may not hike in groups. This means you’ll need to take extra care for safety, and make sure you don’t wander too far. Always make sure someone knows where you’re going, and stick to busier hiking trails (while keeping a safe distance of 1.5m).  

NO MORE 5KM RADIUS
The 5km radius rule has fallen away. This means you are able to drive to the start of your favourite hike or walk between 6am and 6pm.

GAME DRIVES ARE ALSO PERMITTED UNDER LEVEL 3

Public and private game parks will be open for self-drive tours, but no overnight stays are permitted. You won't be able to cross provincial borders to get to any game park, so any visits must be within your home province. 

STICK TO THE RULES
Lockdown rules of social distancing still apply. Parks will be open from 6 am to 6 pm, so make sure you allow plenty of time to get back down before closing time. As with any time you’re outside of your home, you will have to wear a face mask.
