Jitter And Jive At That Thing Called Swing
There will be a dedicated dance floor for you to show off your best moves at the Silo District
The Silo Concerts are a series of music events that bring major local acts and genre-specific performers to the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District. One of these events will showcase jazz born in the 1930s: swing. The name? That Thing Called Swing and it happens on 3 January.
JIVE AND JITTERBUG TO A BIG BAND
This event will have a dedicated dance floor set up at the Silo. That’s fitting as the Swinging All-Stars Big Band will play some classic tunes by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and more for you to jive and jitterbug to. It’s a 20-piece band that specialises in swing and is known to get people up and moving. Plus the moving won’t stop when the band is done, because electro-swing deejays will also be on the line-up to play modern mixes of popular tunes and show off this unique genre mash-up.
THE DEFINITION OF SWING
Swing is to the 1930/40s what EDM is to modern music; ie the music people danced to. It became popular in America and spawned many famous musicians including the legendary Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. The sound is driven by a “swinging” off-count beat and bands were renowned for having a soloist who played over the arrangement to add excitement.
In modern music, deejays and producers have mashed the swing sound with house, hip hop and EDM to create a genre known as Electro Swing.
