A Singles Guide To Valentines Day

As if you needed a Valentine to have a good time? We've put together a comprehensive list that ensures a super Valentine's Day for single folk!

While the rest of the world is bursting at the seams with an almost annoying amount of affection for their significant others, #TeamSingle spends the first half of February ducking and diving from the ever looming celebration of Valentine's Day. Don't get me wrong, love is a beautiful thing but to the single population, it feels like less a celebration of love, and more of an emphasis on how painfully (or maybe not so painfully - good for you) single they are. If we’re being honest, the lovers don’t care about us and we are practically plunging into a self-induced case of temporary depression. For that reason, we have taken it it upon ourselves to put together a list of five things for singles to do in the Mother City on Valentine’s Day.

Host an Anti-Valentine's Day Party

Here’s an idea that involves less chocolates, balloons, red hearts and roses; and more alcohol, food, some good company and more alcohol, obviously. Instead of spending the night wallowing in self pity, why not invite all your single mates for an anti-Valentine's Day throw down. Picture this: An all black theme ( because bright colours are triggering) and an intentional playlist that is more along the lines of Beyonce ft. Nicki Minaj ‘Feeling Myself’ and steers clear of songs like The Script ‘Breakeven’. With February still being summer in Cape Town, hit the kitchen to prepare some summer tapas for the night's festivities; throw some refreshing whisky cocktails into the mix with some good company and you’re good to go. Who said you have to be single and alone on Valentine's Day?

Treat Your Damn Self
Listen, the reality is, if no one else is going to treat you this Valentine's Day, treat your damn self! As much as love is the end goal in terms of dating, self love is of utmost importance. Indulging yourself, showing yourself a good time on your own terms, and being completely content with who you are is the bases from which love for others can grow. With that being said, why not use this Valentine’s Day to love yourself. Not that being single is a disease, but laughter really is the best medicine. What better way to shake the Valentine's blues than in the club. Besides our majestic mountains and clear blue beaches, Cape Town is known for its nightlife. You'll never run short on places to party in the Mother City. Whether you’re in the mood to get all dressed up and sip champagne at Jade Lounge, or you’re looking for a more laid-back scene like The Loft, there is something for everyone. Love Others
Although being single on Valentine's Day doesn't sit really well with us, there are those that go their entire lives without a companion, or at the very least, just some company. Instead of harping on your lack of romantic love, why not spread love this Valentine's Day. There are lots of people and animals in need. Places like the SPCA welcome anyone willing to assist with their little pups, and who can resist puppy cuddles? Cape Town is packed with kids homes where the kids have little to no family.
