Discover why this spiritual retreat is on the rise
Learn from indigenous wisdom keepers along the Olifants River
Last updated: Tuesday, 31 October
Now more than ever, the world is searching for spirituality and meaning – a journey that requires us to go inward. This goes hand-in-hand with an increasing respect and curiosity for indigenous knowledge and spiritual practices.
Tribe In is the curated 4-day experience along the Olifants River where you’ll learn all this from southern African tribal leaders. Through ancient dances and chants; healing practices and sound journeys; and in doing yoga, breathwork and spending time in nature. By yourself, with friends or even your children. See Tribe In’s website for more information.
LEARN FROM INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
Tribe In, which will be held 20 - 24 March 2024, is a place of cultural and intellectual exchange where guests are encouraged to “journey towards their Golden Self.”
Returning this year will be Bushman Piet (this is the name he chooses to go by, and he’s also known as !Aru |Khuisi Piet Barends), a respected leader of the IXam tribe from the Kalahari. He is a storyteller who aims to share knowledge and help preserve practices of the first nations of Southern Africa.
JOIN SOUND JOURNEYS, SPIRITUAL DANCES + MORE
There’ll be a range of talks, ceremonies, rituals and activities that aim to promote healing and spiritual wellness (most are included in the price, some are separate ticketed experiences).
Nkosenathi Ernie Koela, a PhD candidate in African Music Studies, will be leading multi-instrumental sound workshops to create music that is embedded in African spirituality. Cebolenkosi Zuma will introduce guests to African spiritual dance and movement.
You’ll also be able to join a range of restorative yoga, meditation, breathwork and chanting workshops led by leaders in the field.

THE LOCATION IS A NOD TO INDIGENOUS HISTORY
Tribe In will be held at Wolfkop Camping Villages in Citrusdal, along the Olifants River (water is integral to African healing rituals and ceremonies and to feeling reawaked). The land was of particular importance to the first people who lived there: It was an abundant and prosperous area with a flourishing ecosystem and elephant population.
For this reason it was revered, and to honour indigenous history, co-founders Chad Sonday and Kelly Davids collaborated with local elders to bring Tribe In to this land. This year the retreat intends to amplify the messages of ancestors as we seek a path for our future.

CHILDREN ARE WELCOME
The environment along the Olifants River is spectacular and children (babies to teens are welcome) will have the week(end) of their lives. Kids will enjoy yoga, dance workshops, sound journeys and music performances, nature walks and playing in the river.
Unlike other events on the festival and retreat scene, music is not constant at Tribe In. Silence is important for reflection and peace, and the quiet moments allow for intentional family time or time spent in nature (away from the noise and distractions of everyday life).

CONNECT WITH ALL
Tribe In is for all races, cultures, genders and ages to come together to exchange ideas, connect and heal.
And it’s not just locals who are interested. Guests from Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Dubai and more are realising the value of Southern African spiritual practices and the impact it can have on their lives.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
One of the reasons behind this “feeling of home” is the flexibility of the ticket prices, which makes the event accessible to many.
Your ticket includes both a pass to the curated experiences and accommodation. Some experiences are extra, which you can book onsite or via the website.
Guests can choose between a basic dome tent, a spacious bell tent or a villa with shared lounge and kitchenette areas (mattresses, bedding and lighting are included in all three).
You can buy single or shared passes. Image: Pasithea Projects
OUR TIP FOR AFFORDABLE ACCOMMODATION
Prices start at R2 695 per person for 4 nights of accommodation and experiences. Tip: If you bring seven friends and book a villa (the best accommodation option, with a fire boma and private jetty), it works out to the same price per person as a single dome tent for one (the entry-level accommodation).
Food will be available to purchase at the retreat, with a focus on nourishing wholesome meals. There’ll be a variety of light options like smoothies, flatbreads, and sushi during the day. Heavier dinners (like potjies and soups) are served communally and eaten together (like a tribe would) to promote connection and grounding.
There’s also wifi and reception in certain areas, in case you need to get some work done.
