Now In the Big Leagues: Stellenbosch FC
But will they rise to the challenge?
Last Update: 2 August 2019
Ambitious Stellenbosch FC earned automatic promotion to the money-spinning PSL after a stunning display of attacking football, which saw Steve Barker’s team scoring 45 times in 30 games, while ending with a goal difference of +24.
Thanks largely to the NFD’s top marksman, Iqraam Rayners, who bamboozled defences with his speedy runs and neat finishes to reach 19 goals, the club is set to entertain the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and of course local rivals, Cape Town City, for the very first time in their short existence.
While Stellenbosch open their PSL league programme away to Chippa United, huge crowds are expected to flock to Idas Valley Sports Ground, but only after certain upgrades have been completed in order to be PSL compliant.
In the meantime, they’ll be sharing the Cape Town Stadium with Cape Town City and also possibly utilising the Coetzenburg Rugby Stadium which is the alternative venue.
The club’s success was a real team effort because experienced captain, Jarrod Moroole, a stalwart with around 175 NFD caps to his name, netted 7 times and another 9 individuals also found themselves on the scoresheet.
On the transfer front, Barker has snapped up ex-Ubuntu Cape Town striker, Waseem Isaacs, 20-year-old defender, Zimo Brenner, as well as tricky midfielder, Dillan Solomons.
The PSL rookies have also gone the foreign route by obtaining the signatures of former Netherlands junior international goalkeeper, Boy de Jong and Mexican midfielder, Diego Franco.
It remains to be seen whether Stellenbosch will rise to the occasion or fall from grace like their predecessor, Vasco da Gama, who were relegated after just one campaign in the big league.
