Stepbrothers Restaurant Bar and Deli
The Mother City’s newest Italian eatery, bar and deli
Childhood best friends Barry Fuchs and Gionathan Vessio always dreamt of opening their own restaurant. The pair share a love of comedy, Italian fare and American actor Will Ferrell and from it Stepbrothers Restaurant, Bar and Deli was born. The authentic Italian eatery located in the bustling De Waterkant area, offers a bistro, bar and deli experience.
As Italian stems down Gionathan’s bloodline, establishing an Italian restaurant “felt like a perfect match” says Barry. The bistro incorporates strong familial influences, giving it an earnest, sentimental touch.
Gionathan brings home-cooked Italian cuisine to life with his Nonna’s (grandmother) style of cooking - incorporating his family secrets and to his expertise as a chef - while Barry is the business behind the business. The eatery serves scrumptious platters, pizza, pasta and hearty main meals as well as decadent desserts. The spot is ideal for grabbing a coffee in the morning, stocking up on freshly baked bread and cured cold meats or stopping by for a cocktail after work while you wait for traffic to clear out of the city. Cocktails are a new addition to the Stepbrothers menu, and a little bird said that there are plans to add a unique Italian cocktail to the menu.
Gionathan and Head Chef Edward Lloyd pair the best flavours Italy and South Africa offers in order to produce an extraordinary taking. Think the Della Tera - a medley of cucumber, feta, olives, red onion and avocado, topped with toasted nuts and Grana Padano (a hard, slow-ripened, semi-fat cheese from Italy), dressed in raw olive and a lemon balsamic glaze, and that’s just the vegetarian option!
Stepbrothers are vegan and vegetarian-friendly and offer meat options for the carnivore, as well as wheat and gluten free pasta dishes. There are also a few continental dishes available which include Chachi’s Braaied Lamb Chops and Braaied Fiorentina T-bone.
Chef Ed passionately believes that cooking starts in the soil. He explains, “There is nothing weird or mystical about our great tasting food. We know how to treat the ingredients and we know where to find them.”
Note: Curbside seating options are in the pipeline, and rumour has it that Stepbrothers is planning on bringing in a DJ in the near future..
Tip: The Stepbrothers Restaurant and Bar can be booked for private events. Booking the venue not only secures a great space, but Barry and Gionathan will tailor a set menu to suit the needs of your event. Bookings can be made via SMS or WhatsApp on 083 657 3184.
