The Sunday Showcase with Mark Haze

Get a full dose of one of the country’s favourite SA Idols finalists

For the perfect opportunity to see the work Mark Haze has been doing over the years and witness his versatile musical abilities, head out to Hillcrest Quarry on Sunday, 16 July 2017 and watch him do his thing on stage from 2pm. Haze has got a lineup of three high-energy sets in store for eager fans. One will be an acoustic solo, another set will see him accompanied by his brother Gareth on percussion, and the last will be a band performance which consists of himself and musicians Brian Lee, Jacques Janson, and Gareth Haze. In the third set he’ll display not only his voice, but also his skills on the guitar and piano.

You may remember Haze from Season 7 of SA Idols back in 2011, of which he was a finalist. With his powerful, clear chords and impressive vocal range, he won the hearts of many an Idols viewer. His devotees have even claimed that he was the ‘real’ winner that season. After Idols, Haze’s singing career was far from over.  He didn’t miss a beat and has been touring and wowing audiences with his talent and charismatic stage presence since.  He performs both on his own, and as a part of a four-piece band made up of local musicians.

Haze is influenced by rock legends like Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters as well as more contemporary musos like My Chemical Romance. He classifies his sound as ‘soul blues rock’, a fusion genre. Haze released a single in May this year, called ‘Star’. It has a slick melody with a clean beat that is nevertheless subtly fraught with emotion, which comes through in his anguished tones.

The Quarry is the function venue of Hillcrest Wine Estate in the scenic Durbanville Hills region just outside of Cape Town. Hillcrest Quarry is a popular choice in venue, and has been utilised by the likes of SpiltMilk, the Oyster and Champagne Festival and countless music events.
