Little Stream Farmhouse Deli, Cape Town’s best-kept picnic secret
There are hidden sculptures, garden swing-sets and a bamboo fort the kids will love
Little Stream Farmhouse Deli is a wonderland garden maze, although you’d never guess that from the entrance. Inside you’ll find a treasure trove of idyllic green picnic spots, beautifully landscaped gardens, hidden sculptures, a secret swing set and a giant bamboo fort. Then there's the food. The deli serves a charming tea-garden menu with freshly made, warm-to-the-touch scones, with a light and fluffy chantilly-style cream.
SHOP THEN CHOOSE YOUR PICNIC SPOT
The deli at Little Stream Farmhouse is perfectly stocked to fill up a satisfying picnic basket. There's a wide range of bases, from paninis and pastas, to croissants and scones. You could also grab a jar or two of homemade preserves, jams and sweet-chilli sauce or pickled onions and guavas. If a light, peckish kind of lunch is what you’re after the deli also sells tortilla chips with a spicy salsa dip.
After you’ve placed an order inside, follow the signs outside and wander around to the tea garden at the back to collect. It's easy to find if you follow the flower-wrapped archways.
LAY OUT YOUR SPREAD ON THE LAWNS
The great thing about Little Stream Farmhouse Deli is that the grounds are far larger than they appear at first sight, and the picnicking possibilities are almost endless. The lush lawns are extensive, the perfect summer spot for a socially distanced picnic, but if you’re after a little intimacy, try the semi-hidden swing set that can seat two people snuggly.
There’s also a few tables and wooden benches that benefit from the cool shade under trees. But it’s worth wandering about to decide which delightful dining space will suit the mood before making your choice.
LET THE KIDS EXPLORE A BAMBOO FORT
If you venture past the seating area along a narrow stone path, over a wooden bridge and through the thick brush of overgrown trees and vegetation, you'll find yourself in a whole new section of Little Stream Farmhouse Deli, a section that is home to a giant bamboo fort. It is just the kind of natural space children thrill to, and their imagination will run wild.
An advantage is that there is plenty of space on the lawn close by for parents to sit and relax while the little ones play, allowing them keeping an observant eye on their kids.
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR HIDDEN SCULPTURES
When you take a stroll further in and around the gardens, keep your eyes peeled for a giant sleeping woman, two guarding lions or a Peeping Tom waving hello. They're Little Stream's hidden sculptures. There could be more hidden works of art tucked away somewhere, so take the afternoon to try and discover more.
