SA’s First Ceviche-Only Bar Now Open in Woodstock
There’s more to healthy seafood than sushi, South America’s answer recently opened in the Mother City
Ceviche Bar, in the heart of Woodstock, is a clean, minimalist, gallery-like restaurant, where the art is not displayed on the walls, but on the plates. Ceviche Bar is the first restaurant in Cape Town to solely serve ceviche, which is a Peruvian-inspired dish consisting of chopped raw fish marinated in lime.
Essentially, it’s the acidity in the citrus that “cooks” the fish, and many people may find this idea tricky to get behind, but one trip to the Ceviche Bar and you’ll understand why we’re hooked.
Co-owners and couple Tamryn Bruinders and Dylan Norton took their love for ceviche and turned it into a business. Tamryn tells us that they wanted to utilise the fact that as Capetonians we have access to the freshest produce available. The Ceviche Bar prides itself on incorporating a variety of fish into their dishes with all produce being caught daily.
THE ART: FROM SALMON TO SHIITAKE
We visited South Africa’s first restaurant solely dedicated to ceviche where there are simple, traditional dishes for those not accustomed to the dish, as well as more unconventional combinations for those feeling adventurous. Though it’s only been open for little over a month the Ceviche Bar has already gained quite a following, which testifies to the deliciousness of the food, of course.
So, why opt for the Ceviche Bar as opposed to another eatery? For one, they offer an eclectic variety of ceviche so there is sure to be something that strikes your fancy. As well as wacky and wonderful dishes designed for those who already love and appreciate ceviche (lime-cured salmon with nectarine, anyone?), there are two vegetarian dishes, which hero Shiitake mushrooms. This is also a great way to familiarise yourself with the concept of ceviche.
We recommend trying the Ceviche Nectarina, which pairs salmon with nectarine, or the Shiitake Naranja, a vegetarian option comprising cured mushrooms in orange and lime. For a more eccentric experience, opt for the Salmon Breakfast, which incorporates a softly poached egg that, according to Tamryn, really ties the dish together. All nine dishes on the menu are completely unique to the Ceviche Bar, so you won’t find unique pairings like these anywhere else.
THE SETTING: A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
This Peruvian-inspired space can be likened to an art gallery with its simple, but beautiful, interiors. The artistry is in the dishes, so a pared-down backdrop is perfect.
Everything at the Ceviche Bar is minimalist. From the logo displayed on the back wall to the natural light and white-washed wooden floors. All these elements add up and contrast with the hustle and bustle of Woodstock.
Ultimately Ceviche Bar is a one-of-a-kind experience, taking the single-dish concept to an exciting new territory.
Tip: Seating is limited so we recommend making a booking beforehand. Also, take note that breakfast is only served until 12pm
The Bill: R90 average main meal
Opening Times: Monday to Friday: 9am – 4.30pm
